Fire concert with a sting in its tail - Stars raise $1 for bushfire victims...

Superstars Sting and Bryan Adams joined the cream of Australian music to rock Sydney Football Stadium last night - raising $1 million for bushfire relief.

About 20,000 people cheered as Paul Kelly and Daryl Braithwaite started five hours of music at 5.30pm.

Deborah Conway and her band performed a medley of songs including Fire and Rain, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and Light My Fire.

''You just do whatever you can do to help these people,'' Conway, who lives in Melbourne, said.

As night fell, Hunters and Collectors kicked the concert into gear but it was Sting's arrival on stage at 8pm - despite falling rain - which set the crowd alive.

Performing his solo hits including 'If I Lose My Faith In You', 'Fields of Gold' and Police favourites 'Every Little Thing She Does' and 'Roxanne', his first performance in Sydney for more than five years was ecstatically received.

Concert organiser Michael Gudinski said he was confident the fundraising target of $1 million would be reached.

He said a donation of $50,000 from INXS, currently touring in Asia and other donations would help reach the target.

The money is to be divided between the Community Disaster Relief Fund, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Clean Up Australia.
